For some time we’ve been praying and seeking ways to join in Gospel work in Euskal Herria, the Basque Country, in northern Spain and southwestern France. The distinctiveness of the language and culture of the Basque Country has helped show the need for a missions strategy for reaching euskaldunes—speakers of Euskara, the Basque language—and we’re grateful for the many new acquaintances and colleagues that we’ve met involved in mission work there.

Linguæ Christi was expecting two new additions to our team in Wales this spring who have been delayed due to travel restrictions. This has been a challenge to our team in Europe as well as to those who had expected to arrive and have since been forced to delay their plans. The journey to service in cross-cultural missions is often a long one punctuated by surprises and setbacks at the best of times.

The term Sprachspielen is German and means “language games.” It is a term coined by the philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein to describe the nuance and difference of meaning that words can have, depending on the rules of the context of the situation, or language game, in which they are used.
